I grew up not daring to ask for the souvenir

they would be overpriced, meaningless clutter

now I buy mouse ears and Taylor Swift cardigans

stuffed animals, magnets, novelty buttons

for the moment of happiness that they elicit

the extra smile or two this week, it’s worth it.
