Road Trip

Elizabeth Cotton

You said if we ever break up

You would go on a road trip

Get in the car and just drive

Think about what went wrong

So we talk about road trips a lot

I give you a thousand hypotheticals

My anxious heart tries to toughen

But I know it’s a useless exercise

You, with the screeching tires

Me, the crying will tire me

You stop to replace your brakes

My heartbreak will stop me

So no, you can’t go on a road trip

Not alone, anyway.
